I believe in clear-cut positions. I think that the most arrogant position is this apparent, multidisciplinary modesty of "what I am saying now is not unconditional, it is just a hypothesis," and so on. It really is a most arrogant position. I think that the only way to be honest and expose yourself to criticism is to state clearly and dogmatically where you are. I had never really put the word "arrogant" to that sort of faux-humility thing (see: how English majors preface most things they say in a classroom), but that's really accurate. I think this also gives me a lot more sympathy towards Zizek's basic MO.
yeh, i liked it for the same reasons. The importance (and courage, and humility) it takes to leave oneself open to criticism. To create a space for real dialogue when one makes a statement. I am now using this as justification for when i exaggerate my own thoughts when publicly espousing them.
